The Royal William  Lincoln was built in 1840 and named after the SS Royal William a Canadian side-wheel paddle steamship (build 1930 during the rule of King William IV) that is sometimes credited with achieving the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean to be made almost entirely under steam power, using sails only during periods of boiler maintenance.

Most of the buildings on the east wharf survived up to the early 1970’s and until 1972, when Wigford Way was constructed, traffic used to pass over a swing bridge. The last early waterside structure on East Wharf was demolished in 1993 and the Royal William IV is the only pre-1945 building that can be seen today.
